About Me

My name is Marlo, my inspiration comes from nature, the bloom (growth) of a flower, the feel of summer turning to fall and winter to spring are my favorites. Change and growth excite me.
I remember as a little girl my grandma having an old fashioned coffee tin full of random and interesting old buttons. It would be a special treat to get to ‘look at the buttons’. I would push my hand deep into the tin, they somehow felt so nice! I would imagine the fancy coats they once belonged to. Using re-purposed fabrics in my designs evokes similar thoughts…
I have been creating things on and off throughout my life, I went through a woodworking phase, I built my own dresser! ( including immense frusteration). In the early 1990’s I believe I ‘mod-podge’d’ nearly all my furniture, the dog barely got away! The peak of my academic career was when I was the fine arts ‘student of the month’ in grade 9.  I began to discover all things creative, beautiful, artistic and I loved it. The left side of my brain had a long nap when I went to nursing school in 2003. But was thankfully awoken in 2009 when I began gathering up wonderful linens and vintage florals like a little ‘squirrel’ would gather nuts. Because I was working in a care home for elderly residents, I saw a need for name signs for their doors, seeing their name helped differentiate their room for them, these signs needed to be original but not juvenile. The families were buying my signs for their loved ones, many have requested special pieces of clothing be used in the signs resulting in beautiful pieces. I loved creating pretty items SO much that I realized that being the squirrel is what I was meant to do! I felt so authentic and natural… like almost naked! So “The Naked Squirrel” began. Being thirty-ish I think I have maybe sorta figured out this “love” thing, to celebrate love my theme for the Spring 2011 collection at The Naked Squirrel is 'garden party love'. I also enjoy seeing beauty in the unexpected places. These days as The Naked Squirrel, I work each day in my beautiful light filled home studio. The sign of a good day ends with fabric strewn about with occasionaly a few pieces draped on the chandelier (that’s a true story). Thank you for the visit!
